Singapore's food culture even extends to its malls. In the place where US malls would have really crappy food, Singapore malls have outlets that used to be hawker stands. They've moved inside, gotten air-con, and have better silverware. And the food is pretty good too! For the second night of food, we went to ION Orchard, on Singapore's famed Orchard Road. We sampled three standards of Singaporean cuisine.
The first and most standard was the Hainanese chicken rice. A great choice especially as my throat was starting to feel itchy. The chicken, which we had steamed, comes with rice and three sauces: ginger, chilli, and dark soy. It also comes with chicken broth. This chicken rice was pretty good, with flavorful and moist chicken and good ginger in the sauce.
Second was the chicken murtabak (aka roti prata). This was delicious. It is a modified version of the Indian parantha. This one is stuffed with seasoned chicken, folded and fried on a griddle. It also comes with a nice dipping sauce that has a bit of a meat flavor. There wasn't much of this left when I got back to the table...
To balance all the chicken, the final dish was a mixed beef soup with noodles. There was sliced beef, beef balls, and beef tripe. And it was pretty beefy! And pretty tasty as well.
Finally, I had a dragonfruit and mango drink. Dragonfruit is gorgeous on the outside and on the inside. Its flavor isn't that powerful, but it is beautiful to admire.
