Hawker centre #2: Ghim Moh

For our second trip to a hawker centre, we went back to basics. Our destination: the Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre. This location is highly representative of the bulk of hawker centres in Singapore. It is co-located with a group of HDB (Housing & Development Board) high rise apartment buildings, Ghim Moh is its own community. The food centre was located at block 20.

One of the top Indian hawkers was here, Heaven's Indian Curry, located at stall #15. Coming off of our apom high from the day previous, we had to order that again. We also got some putu mayam, a soft white rice vermicelli noodle. Both were served with grated coconut and unrefined brown sugar (bright red in real life). Both were good, though the apom not as superb as those from Little India.

There was a roll of the dice with an order of chwee kueh. This dish is comprised of steamed round rice cakes (half-spheres) topped with preserved radish, garlic, and soy. Our dish also had to have some pork in it. They were tasty, very rich especially considering how they looked. they were also incredibly salty, so only half of our order made it into our bellies. Coincidentally, one of the food blogs also profiled this particular stall, unbeknownst to us beforehand: http://ieatishootipost.sg/2010/05/ghim-moh-chwee-kueh-why-chwee-kueh-is.html.

The final dish was a selection of bao (steamed rice buns filled with various items). We got a chicken bao, a char siew bao, and a lotus paste bao. My favorite was the chicken, which had a nice dice to it, was supplemented by water chestnuts, and retained its juiciness.

All in all, a good meal, perhaps a little one note in terms of white rice-based food.
