An ok meal ruined by bad service, OR, FYI, Konak Kebap Beyoglu will cheat you out of your money

On our way back from the palace, we got trapped in a flash thunderstorm. We ducked into Konak Kebap Beyoglu, right at the Tunel end of Istiklal, for a quick bite to eat.

I spied a new drink on the menu and ordered a bottle. Salgam, or fermented carrot juice, is a tradition in these parts. "Parts" in this case extending to northern India, as Anshul remembered the drink fondly, especially the homemade variety. It was a very funky drink. The phrase "acquired taste" may have come about explicitly because of this drink. That said, it wasn't bad. It was just so different. Carrot juice, for one. Fermented, for two. And a little spicy, for three.

As appetizer we got a standard shepherd's salad. Totally passable, though not life-changing. I liked the clear addition of sliced green peppers, which brought a different amount of spiciness to each bite.

The main was a very mixed grill. This grill contained a little bit of everything. Pide (football-shaped pizzas), lahmacun (small round pizzas), adana kebap, sis kebap, tavuk kebap, chicken wings, doner kebap, and grilled veggies. The chicken wings were great, still moist and juicy though well-cooked. The sis was also nice, with the lamb cooked well. All in all, a decent effort with a couple of standouts.

Now, you might be wondering why the post is titled the way it is! Let me tell you. Turns out the waiter pulled a bait and switch on us. On the menu, the mixed grill was listed as a dish, with a 20YTL pricetag. We tried to order three of these as we weren't starving. Instead, we got seven, or one order per person. So that's more than double-charged right there. Adding insult to insult, he said the mixed grill was 20, then charged us for the 22.50 special mixed grill. And, as a cherry on top, he refused to talk to me about it, walking away in a huff when I brought it up. For shame, Konak Kebap. Survive on the power of your food, not by scamming your customers. Let the power of the internet rise up and teach you a little lesson!
